The Miss Ford Bursaries

Our society and our associate society, L’Association Médical Franco-Britanique were founded to facilitate education, cultural exchange and friendship between the medical professions of both countries.

Miss Ford who was general De Gaulle’s driver during the war, wished to foster good relations between France and Britain. A legacy from her trust forms the nucleus of the funding for these bursaries.

The aims for the bursaries are, to aid medical students from Britain and France to spend elective attachments in establishments speaking each other’s languages and to build a database of information about such attachments as a resource for future students.

Rules

Six bursaries of £300 are awarded each year by competition.

The panel meets in December.

The closing date is December 1st.

The criteria used for the decision are the stated objectives of the applicants.

Students who will be completing their attachment before the panel convenes will be considered providing that their completed application has been received by the society before they leave for their attachment.

Successful applicants are expected to complete a factual report form with information to be used on our web page for the benefit of future students. Unsuccessful applicants are invited to do so. We offer £50 for each satisfactory report.

Bursary holders are expected to enter for the Miss Ford Prize by offering a fifteen minute paper related to the objectives of their attachment.

The panel will select a short list of three entrants who will be invited, with expenses paid, to read their papers at our annual clinical conference. The prize will be awarded at the meeting by the combined membership of both societies. Assistance with presentation is offered.
